Arkady Lytvin (Zhukovsky): “Hals is the pseudonym of one of the heroes of the novel. It is based on real facts. Lyashchinsky was elected king then, some were for him, others were against, Russia intervened, as always, and the tsarist troops. The main character becomes the head of the confederate detachment. The idea that I carry out in this and other essays is the return of the Belarusian nobility. They tried very hard to convince us that the nobility has nothing to do with the Belarusians . It was beneficial to Russia, and to the Poles, and, most interestingly, to the Lithuanians. There are historical figures in the book (one of the Russian generals, Prince Radzivil), there are literary characters.”
