The book examines the impact of climatic anomalies, famine and epidemics on Belarusian society in the middle of the 19th century. on the example of Grodno province. For several years, extremely unfavorable weather conditions for agriculture were observed in the Grodno region, which led to severe crop failures. This, in turn, caused severe hunger, an outbreak of epidemic diseases and a high mortality rate. Crop failures, famine, and disease exacerbated the long-known problems of a society whose economy was based on the forced labor of serf peasants, and caused growing social tension. The poorest population groups became the victims of famine and epidemics. The injustice and archaicness of the serf-manor system became obvious.
